Hon’ble Justice Manepalli Narayan Rao Venkatachalliah

Hon’ble Justice Manepalli Narayan Rao Venkatachaliah served as the 25th Chief Justice of India from 1993 to 1994. He acquired his educational qualifications from the University of Mysore which include a degree of Bachelor of Science as well as a Bachelor in Law. He started practicing law in 1951 and was promoted to the post of a Permanent Judge in 1975.

 

Later, he got elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court on 5th October, 1987. Finally, he retired on 24th October 1994 as the Chief Justice of the country. He has also served as the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission from 1996 to 1998 and in 2000, he headed the National Commission to review the working of the Constitution. After retiring, he continued his work on anti-corruption and human rights issues and extended support for the launch of the ‘Initiatives of Change Centre for Governance’. Currently, he is serving as the Chancellor of Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, which is a Modern Gurukula and as a member of the Advisory Board of Foundation for Restoration of National Values, a society established in 2008. He received the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor from the President in 2004. He was bestowed upon with different honors like Doctor of Letters from Pondicherry University, Doctor of Laws (LL.D) from Manipal University and Honorary Doctorate from Rani Channamma University, Belagavi.
